What I Saw: News and Views from the Fields of GKB Tampa

(A little late but better late than never.)

First of all, I just found out on Thursday that Bull was leaving all of us for an employment opportunity. So I want to thank Bull so much for playing and for his contribution to the success of GOKickball Tampa. Good luck and I hope to see you down the road.

Seven Minutes that Have Been the Bane of My Existence

Let's just get this out there, Ryan messed up. It happens. He was aware of the new clock rule (actually used it during the tournament) and, in the moment, made the wrong decision.

Over the past week, I have been apprised of clock killing strategies (don't have a problem with it) and rules to justify why I shouldn't play seven minutes at all.

Bottom line: The seven minutes will be played prior to the start of the tournament, only if it affects seeding. We will re-visit the issue after week eight.

Recent Conversation with the City

Me: Can we get someone out here to open the fence door closest to the large parking lot?
Idiot City Rep: No, we can do that.
Me: Why?
Idiot City Rep: Because we are have been having problems with that door.
Me: It was open last week.
Idiot: Look, we're having problems with that door. It's an old field, we have problems with doors, the lights, the dugouts. It's like you call me every week with a problem. (sniffle, sniffle) I'm tired. I have a baby . . . (At this point, I stopped listening. I think she said something about not getting laid in over two years and having a bad credit score.)
Me: Well, are you going to have a rep out tonight?
Idiot: (Click)

How close did we come to not playing on Thursday?

Real close. Glad we got it done... make up games are a pain in the ass.

Toejammers aka Soul Glo vs. Growlers

Was really curious to see this game, not only because it was the battle of last season's champ versus a team that did really well at GKB Southeast Kickball Fest, but I had to know how a team that would come to practice on a bye week would perform.

The result was a well-played game full of outstanding offensive plays and excellent strategy. If there was a surprise, it was the score 11-9. When elite teams play in kickball, the score tends to be low. Good job on the win, Toejammers!

What's in Yellowbird's Spray Canister?

I need to know because I felt slightly inebriated after trying it.

Pudding Shots

Damn, they were good. And because of that, Maria is my MVP for week two. By the way, Yellowbird was my week one MVP.  My weekly MVP usually has more to do with what I drink on the field than actual play.

You Need To Do's

Each week, players gently (sometimes) suggest enhancements to our game. I sum up the most interesting ones in "You Need to do's"

-"Change the ref shirt because it's white (like BC! BC!'s shirts)"- Uh, no dude.
-"Get the city to change lighting schedule from 6:45p-9:45p to 7:00p-10:00p"- That's a real possibility. Searching in the dark for bases pretty much sucks.

Food at Yard of Ale

I try one thing a week. This week, the pepperoni pizza. It's the perfect pizza... for me at least. Very saucy, very cheese. The crust was crisp on the outside, soft on the inside. Try it in between Yueglings.

He just posted it... but it had the time-stamp of when he started to write it. So I moved it up.

I wish the refs would wear a bright colored best or at least stay out of the way. With our team being white we have thrown in the direction of the ref several times this season.

I stayed out of the whole "7 minute" debate because I wasn't there week one so not sure how that all went down. But I think both sides agree with Johnnys decision to play it before the tourny only if it affects seeding.

So between the 7 minute debacle in week 1 and the sliding past the base issue in week 2; I'm looking forward to playing a "non drama" theme game this week with TBN. The only controversy I forsee is deciding what team is more "colorful". Come to the fields early to witness this weeks epic theme game, it's going to be totally rad.

The problem with playing the 7 minutes "if it affects seeding" is... of course it's going to affect seeding.

Even if the Shockers and Ballics are not near the top of the standings... one win or loss for either team will move them up or down and change who they play round one.

So are we then just going to argue because Rob would rather play TBN round one instead of the Ligers?

I see a storm on the horizon and he's losing his hair...

We can get some bright neon green shirts from the country station in town for the refs.

Should we play those 7 minutes an hour before tourney time? Those 7 minutes could be turned into 45 when we go into the 7th inning

Rob said...

Chan in that situation you put, since we play TBN this season we would throw those 7 minutes and walk in 10 runs for the ballics just to drop and play the Ligers.

Chandler said...

Exactly what I'm saying. Both teams are going to want to play the 7 minutes anyway to change who they play round 1.

Which is why we should just say the Shockers won and move on with our lives.

Smithkey said...

Agreed. Shockers won, move on.
