SidearmGate 2013 and more

Alright, what is the deal with the side arm call?! Is it a dead ball or ball ball because Robes got called on it in a crucial play in our game and I stopped playing because I thought it was a dead ball and I know some other people did too.  Same thing happened during the PBC-Superbad game - and then all of a sudden Nate announces (per Johnny I believe) that now all side arm calls would be dead balls - in the middle of the game lol.  I don't personally care one way or another - I just want to know what the damn rule is.

In other news, I talked with some OAFers last night at the bar (who went ALL out with the easter theme btw - fuckers!) and they told me they had a team party last weekend during which they discovered the blog and spent 30 minutes reading. Conclusion: they think we're all assholes and have vowed to get access to the blog to defend themselves against the hate we (mostly I) bestow upon them.

Somehow THEE Beer Nuts managed to tie us last night. Unfortunately they lost a great player as their dude with that awesome orange bubble jacket got sniped on his way to first base and tore his achilles tendon (OUCH). PBC crushed Supa like 8-3 or something and Ballics completely annihilated OAF 14-1 . Ligers squeaked away 2-1 over FreeBallers.  Griff told me at one point they had bases loaded with no outs and couldn't manage to score (different kind of ouch). Deeks was an asshole, Souder was a lazy sonofa, Ligers had a theme game, E-Flo ripped a shit ton of cigs and I was a crazy Hispanic - pretty standard Thursday night!

Quote of the night
Justin, as Deeks run towards him to catch a pop up that is between them, DEAD SERIOUSLY: "You're scaring me"

Why not just let us throw sidearm?

Nate Dawg said...

Get teams to vote in sidearm as a legal way to pitch. I honestly do not care but a lot of people in the league believe it takes away from the fun of the game.
When it comes to how it is called I dont care either but it made more sense to me to wait until the play ends (either the kicker kicks the ball or does not kick the ball) and then make the sidearm call. Its just like if a ball is bouncy. You may think it is a ball but if the ref thinks its a strike then you might have to kick the ball rather than incur a strike call. But I am fine with calling it either way. I only have to worry about calling it on Robes and CJ. No one else in the league really throws sidearm.

Jess said...

Yea - CJ called it as soon as it was pitched which caused confusion. If it's a ball then I'd rather it be called a ball (side arm ball) afterwards as well

Nate Dawg said...

Deeks disagreed with me last night and had that I will murder your whole family look in his eyes so I called it his way...I like my family

Chandler said...

According to our votes in the past... a side arm pitch is a BALL. You can still kick it if you want, so it's not a dead ball. But the ref should loudly announce "BALL" whenever someone throws side arm.

Let's also talk about how nobody knows how fair/foul works and how Ruben and Griff knowingly like to cheat.

Chandler said...

Oh... and at least one person from OAF has posting rights. EVERYONE can make comments though.

Nate Dawg said...

I'm down will yelling "BALL" really loudly if they throw sidearm but I dont really see how much different that is than yelling "sidearm" really loud. People not knowing the rule are probably going to stop what they are doing and then come argue with me then possibly murder my family.

Jess said...

Yea I guess the point is letting people know it's not a strike (even though it looks like a strike) and the only reason it's a ball is because of the sidearm

Chandler said...

Yeah you should let the kicker know they don't HAVE to kick it.

The side arm debate is so damn old, I can't believe people are 1) still doing it and 2) still arguing about it.

Just play the game like everyone else in the league does. If you can't win without pitching side arm, your team probably doesn't deserve to win anyway.

Jess said...

And btw Griff and Ruben said YOU were the one cheating in yall's game. Something about differing fair v. foul calls between home plate ref and first base ref

Jess said...

1. I wasn't arguing about it I just didn't know what it was supposed to be (a ball or a dead ball) because it was BOTH things last night and 2. YOU'RE SO DAMN OLD

Chandler said...

The first base ref AND the home plate ref decided that a ball is fair if it crosses first base in the air and lands foul. They determined that kickball is different than baseball.

There was no difference of opinion that the ball landed 5 feet foul past first base.

Ruben even said it was foul. But he, Griff and their captain said "we're going with the call that was made" (quote from their captain).

Knowingly cheating is why nobody liked the ToeJammers either.

Paul said...

Actual words said by a ToeJammer during the playoffs last season..."Wow I can't believe we almost got away with that"

Chandler said...

Exactly, Paul.

Trying to "get away" with a blatantly blown call (especially if the refs don't know the rules) is the definition of unsportsmanlike.

It's doucehy enough to argue close "bang-bang" plays. But we, as a league, should be trying to improve our refs. Not reap benefits of their ignorance. You should all remember what it was like to have a league with shitty refs.

In professional sports, teams try to get away with blown calls all the time. But that's because they stand to make more money by winning. We don't stand to make a damn thing. So just get the call right and move on with the game.

Jess said...

Was the call they were referring to when I said someone was out on the force when there was no force on the play? Sorry, it was the jello shots talking

Paul said...

No, during our game with them when the runner purposely knocked the ball out of the fielders hand in order to stop a double play.

Paul said...

Wait Chandler, I thought I win $1,000 Yellabucks for a kickball championship?

Chandler said...

You do. But I think Yella has to print some more of them first.

Robes said...

I think that I need a diagram of what exactly is considered sidearm.

If throwing at 3 o'clock is completely SideArm and throwing at 6 o'clock is completely underhand can I throw at 4:30 and be fine?

Paul said...

It depends if its Eastern Standard Time or Daylight Savings Time

Chandler said...

It's called softball.

If it's not legal in softball, it isn't legal in kickball.

And I know you get the gist of what is legal in softball. If not, I'm sure we can look up their definition of a legal pitch.

RÜBS said...

Ty i mean Chan, we cheated in no kind of way.

we just insisted you play with a horrible call that was made. fun teams do that but since there are no fun teams, let us clear the air.

that ball was foul as shit. yep. paige and i even laughed about it at the plate. ref made a bad call, she was certain of it and yet lobbying by the league rep and Chan, i would say one of the organizers of the league convinced her otherwise after an 8 minute interrogation. a turn around i have seen no other "captain" debate make this season.

now understand i insisted the bad call stand because LAST week similarly my squad had a call go against them but in that case, the ref said while yes that player was out, and for the record, we likely could have saved a tie with the growlers, the ref insisted the ball call stand to not undermine the reffing for the rest of the game.

so if you want to call cheating the fact, i had sit on a bad call for the sake of the reffing integrity last week and now i have to give a bad call because its the just plain right thing to do, well than i am a cheater.

but either way you look at it, due understand my frustration. rookies i guess do not get calls i just happen to know better.

bad calls sucks and them seem to always stand expect for yesterday. odd i guess. either way, i explained it to Johnny and he said he will do what he can to have the refs make for informed decisions.

and should you feel the need to bring up the third base call, yep, that sucked for you guys too. but last season we gave up a run on that too and dammit if it wasnt a 'balic that did that to us also. i think we are on to some 'balic mischief!

btw the real reason i did not go skating. i do not know how to skate. sad face.

Chandler said...

Whatever happened to you guys last week has nothing to do with yesterday. The point is, we shouldn't let the refs get blatant calls wrong. We should be helping them learn.

I can guarantee you if the roles were reversed, I'd be telling the ref it's a foul ball, taking a run off the board for our team. Maybe that's just me. I'm used to being one of the few people in the world with integrity.

So I still consider you and Griff biting your veteran tongues as "cheating."

Also... there were a ton of brown people skating last night. You should have come. Reid was pretty good and probably could have shown you how.

Chandler said...

Johnny, on the other hand, does not know how to skate. Nor does Rachael. Or Drunk Litman.

Probably Sober Litman too.

Paul's attempt at funny comments about the league = Blog Death

A discussion on the angle of pitching arms and a fowl ball = Blog Gold Mine

Jess said...

All it takes is some discussion about chicken nuts!

Paul said...

Hey Jess, spend less time calling out my misuse of homonyms and more time kicking the ball on the ground

Chandler said...

Jess is Queen of the pop-ups.

RÜBS said...

hmmmm, that is an interesting way of looking at it. i guess i did not process it that way.

i considered it a bad call only. i have had so many bad refs in my day, i processed as ref responsibility only. never even registered that previous opponents are cheaters by taking bad calls.

i will use your angle going forward and hopefully other teams will be willing to take points off the board under the veil of blatantcy.

I knew Reid was a good skater. I saw that Little Bow Wow movie on BET.

RÜBS said...

BTW i love how Litman taking his pants off at the field phases no one anymore LOL

Chandler said...

You still should have scored with the bases loaded and no outs. Haha.

When I think of Litman, I think of him in a thong... so it's a bit desensitizing

JD said...

Since I think I started this, here are my thoughts......

My issue is that I had a couple of fouls including one that Ref Nate called sidearm after the pitch. On the next pitch i swung at a bad pitch fearing a strike call and flew out. Nate said afterwards it was sidearm. I asked how was I supposed to know that was your judgement prior to accepting a strike call. Illegal pitch should be called immediately and should be a dead ball. Kicker should only have to decide between ball and strike, not how it was delivered.

Unknown said...

I have never had a problem with how Nate’s calls my pitching or any other ref. They get it right every time and I sometimes do throw side arm. The refs have been calling it right on me all season with no problems. If the other team kicks a side are pitch the ball has always been live. If you don’t kick it it’s a ball. Last night I was calling side arm as soon as I noticed it so the kicker would know he didn’t have to kick it if he didn’t want to.

Also as long as we all have been playing we should know the rules by now or most of them and only those people should ref.

What pissed me off was in the middle of a game with one strike on a kicker the rule was changed. Now taking a strike off the board and making it a ball. This person would have fouled out and ended the inning. So at that point I didn’t throw any more curveballs. And I hardly ever get bothered by anything anyone says about me or calls made on me.

We have all been playing a long time and I like the challenge of kicking curve balls so I don’t care what the rule is throw me a curve, fast, slow, bouncy, what ever. This is for FUN.

I play in two leagues one where I can throw what ever the hell I want as long as its not over hand and no one is bitching or saying they are not having fun, and this league where everyone bitches about side arm or bouncy. I could care less ether way.

I’m not going to lie as I do enjoy DRINKING and trying to throw curveballs. So sometimes I throw side arm or not so underhand. I’m competitive I don’t know how else to play.

Griff said...

I was first base coaching and didnt even speak to the PAID head ref. She overruled her first base ref calling it foul because she said the rule is not the same for kickball as it is with baseball. Me and my "veteran tongue" have been playing in 3 different kickball leagues during the course of this GKB season with 3 sets of rules that differ in various ways between each other.

Yes, I clearly eat, sleep, and shit kickball, but not just the GKB brand of kickball, so when a PAID REF (who I am supposed to trust to know the rules better than myself or any other person reffing the game as part of their job) overrules her volunteer ref (who was also from a rookie team no less) , why SHOULD I tell her she's wrong?
Because the other team is jumping up and down freaking out at the ref about the call? Been there...done that.
Because she's an "inexperienced" ref? Then why is she getting paid to be the head ref?? I'm going to trust her when she confidently makes a call, citing rules.

And Paul, since we've decided to fan the jammer-hate flames from last season, I'll tell you that the person who performed that little stunt did it on his own accord. He lied to Me, Ruben, and Christian about it afterwards, causing us to unknowingly defend his actions. We bitched him out about it later on that night when he confessed his dirty little deception, because it certainly played right into our stigma. THAT was unsportsmanlike, no doubt. And he is no longer playing in this league.

And pitching....BITCHING about pitching...will never go away in this league. Why not continue the neutering of the rulebook and just pitch to ourselves? One pitch...fair or foul. Or TWO pitches...you get one do-over.
People will kick a a lot more, puts the emphasis on Scoring, and makes the home plate refs job a lot easier.

JD said...

Cj,

Play however you want and I enjoy playing your team. . You threw 4 "called" sidearm pitches to me and 3 resulted in strikes. Amusing you would lament the 4th as a ball. My arguement is that the pitcher shouldn't benefit at all from violating the rules. Logic would dictate that the result of the play should not benefit the offending party.....discuss.

Chandler said...

Griff... in the FIVE different kickball leagues I've played in Tampa... NONE of them say you can slice a ball in the air around first base, having that ball land in foul territory, and still call it fair.

Don't pretend you were confused about what the correct call was. You're not that ignorant, or that stupid.

Also, GKB historically has had HORRIBLE paid refs... up until last season when we started using player refs. Even Kickball Society has a few terrible paid refs. You should have told the ref the ball was foul, just like I would have done if I were in your shoes. Just like everyone on my team except Todd would have done (because he hates freedom).

But I like you too much for you to pretend on a public forum that you were confused over what the ruling should have been. You know the rules better than 99% of the league. The air isn't that thin up where your brain is.

Paul said...

JD, I can't speak for the rest of the Growlers but by time I realized the guy from TBN was down 5-10 people already surrounded him. Personally, the last thing I want if injured is 40 people standing around in a circle. So I thought it best to stay out of it.

JD said...

Jess, I know and I phrased that incorrectly. Paul, I definitely wasn't referring to you nor your team as a whole. I agree that only people who are qualified to help should involve themselves. I only stayed in the area because I knew he'd need to be carried eventually and I'm good at carrying things.

I thought it was pathetic that with the guy on the ground and obviously injured they were making sure of the out call and timeout. At least show a little respect by waiting until after he's addressed.

Unknown said...

Deeks.

You are correct the kicker should only have to worry about balls or strikes. If the pitcher throws an illegal pitch the ref should call it right away as this can be seen before the ball gets to the plate. If the kicker doesn’t kick it it’s a ball but the ball should still be live if the kicker decided to kick it.

I know I push the limit on side arm and go over the limit from time to time. The better the kicker is the more I push the limit. We all know you can kick ball to the moon and you have been on fire this season, so I was enjoying the challenge of trying to get you out.

Btw you are all assholes and I enjoy seeing and talking shit about all of you every week.

Jess,

As you know the Suberbad stereo died on us last week. I blame Nate. Where did you get the block rocker?

Jess said...

I got it at Target for like $150 - it's called the Ion Tailgater but they have a nicer version called the Ion Block Rocker I think. Although I just looked at Target and they don't sell them but other places do. Just Google it. It even comes with a mic! (I've been preparing a karaoke compilation of Nelly's Greatest Hits for y'all)

And I was never arguing about the sidearm pitch. I just couldn't remember what we decided on - whether it was a ball or dead ball. You keep doing yo thang, CJ!

no way Frank would have taken points off the board! Heck he would take a forfeit instead of playing :P

CJ, i will pitch a couple games before the season is out so you do not have to carry all the hate.

Shockers will make this finals this year in WAKA me thinks.
